My father William Mullins (1927-2001) was a BS and PhD graduate of the University of Chicago. He was a University Professor of Metallurgy, and Dean of Science and Engineering, at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He was very active in, and a generous contributor to, many liberal organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, and he sat on the Pennsylvania ACLU Board. The night that the local 11 o'clock news announced my father's place on Nixon's enemies list, he received many congratulatory phone calls from friends and colleagues. My mother humbly maintained that "There were so many others who were more deserving of this honor."
