General Gavin (who had commanded the 82nd Airborne during World War II) was arguably the highest-ranking military officer to criticize Lyndon Johnson's conduct of the Vietnam War and call for an American withdrawal. He had even been approached by Allard Lowenstein to run against Johnson in 1968 before Gene McCarthy accepted. Gavin was a Republican but had no closeness towards or friendship with Nixon and continued pushing for withdrawal through Nixon's presidency.
